This month we will again be focused on that little thing called happiness. Funny thing happiness, there is no one way to get it, all external ways of attaining happiness consistently, i.e. money, love, sex, power, vacations, spiritual oneness, food, alcohol, drugs, unicorns, etc. turn out to be false promises in the long run that lead to more unhappiness than before we tried to attain them. Over time we spend more of our energy being “against” failure, pain and loss in our lives than being “for” having a happy life.
I just read an article in the June 6 New Yorker about how Donald Trump is effortlessly getting people to follow him with no real message or plan beyond being king of the world. It’s simple, he understands what motivates most people. What motivates most people (sadly) is not creating a happy healthy world, it is the fear of losing whatever bit of ground, money, and possessions they have, that as we said above never lead to happiness anyway.
The article went on to say that research shows that the pain of loss in most people is felt twice as much as the pleasure of gain. That is Trump’s Olympic event, he has mastered the art of mixing 2/3’s fear of loss with 1/3 possibility of not having as much pain.
So when Trump says “Hillary will take away your guns” and “China’s trade practices amount to the greatest theft in the history of the world,” and “We are losing everything” to immigrants, how does that make you feel? Strangely, people are twice as likely to hear and remember those statement than positive.
The mind is easily fooled. Learning to see this one pattern in yourself can change everything.
If you are going to be happy you cannot be “against” anything, you have to be “for” what you stand for and are called to in your heart. That is the only real path to happiness. When you follow your heart, you are making a difference, you are an Olympian and are not being part of the problem.
When you hear a politician or TV pundit saying inflammatory things, feel how easy it is to be against things and situations, then think about the fact that no Olympian ever really made it by being “against”, they became great by being “for” expressing their greatness.
Every time you are about to do something, ask yourself, am I doing this because I am against it or for something better. Then make your choice.
Happiness is the result of moving toward your highest inner potential. When you do, you feel a surge of energy that says yes. Yes is the energy of the immune system and happiness in your body.
Unhappiness is always the result of being “against” something, like losing what you have (that isn’t making you happy anyway), or not trying new things because it might be worse than what you are already doing. You know you are against when you are feeling drained energetically, have anxiety or frustration or anger that you live with more than you like, and you will tend to say “no” to life before you have looked at all the options.
Happiness comes from being “for” the life and gifts you have and spending more energy going for life and being called to your mission that by its nature is new and exciting and brings you energy, health, amazing people and opportunity. Don’t let people like Trump run your world, be the Olympian who is fearless about attaining their best in this lifetime.
