The great philosopher Rene Descartes said, “I think therefore I am.” In that one statement, and a book of meditations, he proved the existence of the real soul self.
Wow! That seems to mean that thinking must be really important if you are going to know who you are and what your soul purpose in life, Right?
I don’t think so.
Rene was a pretty smart guy, and his philosophical statement in simple terms should mean since we all spend just about every moment of the day thinking, we all should know who we are at the soul level.
But this does not prove out… I have worked with thousands of people and watched what really awakens people …

….and it is rarely the way they are thinking. As a matter of fact, I have found the way most of us think and picture our lives creates what I call a Virtual Reality Trap that keeps us stuck, not free and alive in all areas of our lives.
I am a super creative guy and I think a lot, but if I look back at to how much my thinking has helped me in my career, my relationships and my health and in knowing my life purpose, or, how much it has sabotaged me over and over again… I would have to say that it is about 99 to 1 against it actually being any help at all…
Maybe you have seen this too? How many people do you know who are highly educated and think a lot about a lot of things, but are still clueless or live in a LA-LA Land about who they really are or what their purpose is in life?
The Virtual Reality Trap is the missing chapter in my upcoming book, “Discover Your Purpose,” but was foundational in helping me see what blocks people from living in their core and mission. So I wanted to share it with you in this video blog series.
In the Virtual Reality Trap, your mind creates an endless loop of images of how your life should be, or of who you think you are, or how the world should be. You literally create a virtual world in your mind’s eye just like the virtual reality computer games.
From how you see your body, to how you see your mission in life, to how you think others see you, to how a good person drives, talks, walks, and how a bad person drives, talks walks… it’s all in your head and only when the world agrees with your internal imagining are you truly happy.
The trap is that your image is just a mental ideal, or a fear of possible catastrophe, but will never match what is actually happening in the world and makes almost everything seem like a problem or a least an annoyance. It is so real for you that you invest more of your energy and spirit into your thinking and virtual world than in the real world. Disconnected from your reality which is the only place your true purpose exists.
So what is the solution?

Last week in video #2 (link) Einstein gave us the a clue. He very nicely said that the mind is a problem creator and solver. So the thinking mind caught in its limited view sees the world as a problem to be solved, and in so doing misses the meaning of life altogether since there are no real problems outside the ones the mind creates. (HINT: That is the key to real power.) Problem solving thinking as a life pattern is the most common kind of thinking and can never solve any problem, because that kind of thinking is the problem.
Thinking you have problems to solve creates more suffering in your life than anything else because when you see the world through the lens of problem solving, even when one is solved there are an infinite number of more problems.
How to get out of your Virtual Reality Trap #1
Let go of the illusions that you have problems.
And it is easier than you think.
The process starts simply, just ask yourself, “is this really a problem?” This lets you bring this invisible stressor in your life to consciousness. It starts the process of shutting down that pesky function of the your thinking to see the world as something to be fixed and causes you and your loved ones and everyone you know untold pain.
How to get rid of your Virtual Reality Trap #2
You have to simply be able to tell what in your life is a “problem” and what in your life is simply a “life issue” or situation that you can or can’t deal with.
I am not saying that there is no such thing as a problem, but what you call a problem has to change. Problems cause stress and illness and limitation.
Step 2 is ask yourself, “is this a life issue that I can and will deal with, or something I can’t and won’t deal with?” It will be one or the other. Neither one is a problem, the problem only comes when you resist dealing with it or think you shouldn’t have to.
Next week on video #4 I will share with you just how to this in your life to free yourself from your Virtual Reality Trap!
In the meantime watch this video and start asking yourself, “Is this really a problem? Or is it just a life issue that I will deal with move on from?”
